Grand Basset
versus Petit Basset
The most remarkable difference
is of course the size, the Grand is ''the big one'' and the Petit is
the
''small one''. The standard for the Grand is between 39 and 43 cm,
excellent
dogs are allowed to be 45 cm. The Petits are between 34 and 38 cm, and
excellent dogs are allowed to be 1 cm smaller. But of course there are
more differences! First the type, the Grand is longer in everything,
while
the Petit is shorter. With everything I mean the legs, the body, the
head
(skull and muzzle), the ears and the tail.

The Grand and the Petit
Basset Griffon Vendéen
The ears of the Grands has to be at leats untill the nose and longer is even better, but the ears of the PBGV are not allowed to come further then the nose. And of course the muzzle of the GBGV is longer then the muzzle of the pBGV, so that makes the difference in lenght of ears even longer! The tail is about the same difference, as the tail of the Grand has to be at least untill the hock, while the tail of the Petit may not be longer then the point of the hock.
At this photo you can
see the difference in ears and heads!
The body of the Grand is longer then that of the Petit. A Petit reminds a little bit to a Terrier in some points, especially because they are shorter and the shorter tail. The tail is also always upwards in the air. A Grand will keep his tail a little bit less right up in the air.

in action, watch the difference in tail carriage!
These are the most important differences in their looks, but of course they also have a lot the same. Like their coats and their colours. And both of them has to be constructed gracefull and strong, so they can show a strong movement with long steps and a lot of drive!
There are also differences in character. The Grand is more calm then the Petit. The Petit will notice everything and want to see everything, while the Grand can just stay where he is, when he don't think it's important enough.
